Normal man arrested after reported gunfire; weapons, drug charges pending

NORMAL — An 18-year-old man was arrested on weapons and drug charges Monday morning after police said an argument escalated to gunfire in north Normal.

Normal police officers were sent about 6:45 a.m. to the 1700 block of North School Street because of a report of gunfire. Witnesses told police two people were arguing before shots were fired outside an apartment, Chief Rick Bleichner said in a statement issued Monday afternoon.

No injuries were reported.

Police said the suspect was found in a nearby apartment where they reportedly found evidence revealed relating to the shots-fired call and other criminal activity.

He was taken into custody on preliminary charges of reckless discharge of a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon without a valid firearm owners identification card, illegal possession of ammunition, manufacture and delivery of 15-100 grams of ecstasy, manufacture and delivery of 1-14 grams of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of 30-500 grams of cannabis.

The other person has been identified, and police believe “the incident is related to an ongoing feud between the two,” according to the release.

The Pantagraph does not name suspects is such cases until they are formally charged.
