Marijuana seized during arrest

Illinois State Police seized about 38 pounds of cannabis during a traffic stop on Interstate 55 near Pontiac early Thursday. A 45-year-old woman was booked on preliminary charges including marijuana trafficking.

PONTIAC — Police say they found more than 38 pounds of marijuana in a woman's car when an officer stopped the driver for a traffic violation early Thursday.

Formal charges including marijuana trafficking are expected to be filed in Livingston County against the woman, 45. The Pantagraph does not name suspects until formal charges are filed.

An Illinois State trooper stopped the woman's car near Pontiac, in the southbound lane of Interstate 55 near mile marker 202.

“During the stop, the odor of cannabis was detected and the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was arrested for an outstanding warrant,” said Capt. Gregg Cavanaugh in a statement released Thursday. “A subsequent search of the vehicle by troopers resulted in the seizure of approximately 38 pounds of cannabis.”

The woman faces initial charges of marijuana trafficking, delivery of marijuana over 5,000 grams and possession of more than 5,000 grams of marijuana. She is lodged in the Livingston County jail in Pontiac.
