NORMAL — Normal police are investigating the circumstances that led to a accident that killed a former Normal Community West High School student over the weekend.

Peyton Scheuermann, 18, most recently of Somonauk, died in the crash that was reported at 2:30 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Raab and Parkside roads in Normal, McLean County Coroner Beth Kimmerling said Monday. An autopsy completed Monday indicated he died of head and neck injuries, but a final determination will be made after tests are completed, she said.

The driver in the one-vehicle accident, Garrett Peterson, 19, of Normal remains in the McLean County jail on charges of aggravated driving under the influence. Police reports indicate Peterson lost control and struck a utility pole.

A second passenger remains hospitalized in intensive care, but officials have not yet released his name.

Peterson admitted to police he had five cups of beer earlier in the evening and also admitted to smoking marijuana at a party earlier in the evening, court records said. Peterson’s blood-alcohol content was measured at 0.105 percent, which is above the 0.08 legal limit for driving, authorities said.

Normal Police Chief Rick Bleichner said his department is looking into Peterson’s account of a party.

“We are continuing to conduct the investigation and are hoping for cooperation,” Bleichner said. “At this point, there have been no other arrests.”

Scheuermann participated in track and field at Normal West before transferring last year to Somonauk High School where he graduated. Scheuermann placed fifth in the state in cross country in 2008 as a Parkside Junior High School student, according to the Illinois Elementary School Association website.

His mother, Dawn Green, is a former Unit 5 administrator and now is superintendent at Somonauk. His stepfather, Tim Green, is principal at Chiddix Junior High School, Normal.
