Criminal sexual assault — A Bloomington man was convicted Thursday of criminal sexual assault related to a December 2017 incident.
A jury found Francisco Cortes, 51, of the 900 block of Ninth Street, guilty of sexual assault, domestic battery, child endangerment and resisting a police officer. The endangerment charge accused Cortes of striking the female victim while she was holding a child.
After the verdict, Assistant State's Attorney Ashley Scarborough said "sex assault survivors are often afraid to face their abuser and this case was no different. Hopefully, this verdict will empower other survivors to come forward."
Pending charges accuse Cortes of intimidation and unlawful communication with a witness. He faces eight to 30 years when he is sentenced July 8 on the 2017 charges.
