DELAVAN — At least 11 people were injured Monday morning when a semitrailer truck collided with a charter bus on northbound Interstate 155 at mile marker 14 in Tazewell County.

A truck driven by Daniel V. Fitzgibbons, 39, of Dubuque, Iowa, struck the rear of the bus driven by Lawrence Chavis, 54, of St. Louis, Mo. about 10 a.m. just north of the Illinois 122 exit, Illinois State Police reports said.

Preliminary investigations show the truck struck the rear of the bus, police said, adding the truck driver and 10 of 29 occupants on the bus were taken to various hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Fitzgibbons was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and aggravated use of an electronic communication device when involved in an accident that results in great bodily harm, police said.

The highway was closed for investigation and debris removal, but was reopened later in the afternoon, police said.

Police have not released the charter bus's origin or destination.
