Woodland board cuts teachers, staff

SOUTH STREATOR - The Woodland School Board has decided not to renew the contracts of four teachers and three other staff members due to the uncertainty of $584,000 in state funding.

The board is also considering consolidating the fourth and fifth grades.

The layoffs will mean fewer hours available to the lower grades in art and high school agricultural programs, said Superintendent Doug Foster.

Indianapolis St. closed for work

BLOOMINGTON - Both lanes of Indianapolis Street, between Croxton Avenue and Bell Street, will be closed today through Friday for patching.

Drivers can expect delays.

Twin City cleanup week is scheduled

BLOOMINGTON - Community clean-up week in Bloomington-Normal will be April 24 through May 1.

Volunteers are needed to remove trash and debris from parks, roads, neighborhoods and along Constitution Trail.

I-55 work begins north of Normal

PARIS - Work begins Monday on Interstate 55, north of Normal, between Interstate 39 and Veterans Parkway. Work should be done by November 2011.

Workers will remove and replace pavement; add a third lane, new lights and signs; widen the road over U.S. Business 51; remove bridges over Constitution Trail; and rebuild bridges carrying I-55 over Linden Street.

Linden will be lowered to accommodate the new bridges. Constitution Trail will be moved along Linden Street.

F.H. Paschen/S.N. Neilson, Chicago, has the $26 million state contract.

Local woman, dog eye national title

BLOOMINGTON - Barbara Scanlan of Bloomington and her Papillon, Taylor, will compete March 26-28 at the American Kennel Club national agility championship, Tulsa, Okla.

They are the first competitors from McLean County to attend. They are part of the Illinois state agility team.

Taylor's show name is Wingssong Sweet Baby James. Scanlan has been training dogs for 13 years.

Nature center sets steward work days

FUNKS GROVE - Sugar Grove Nature Center will have stewardship work days for 9 to 11 a.m. April 3 and 17.
