NORMAL — Several Twin City high schools competed in the state speech competition Feb. 17 in Peoria after regional and sectional competition.
University High School, Normal, placed first at regionals and earned third at sectionals before advancing to state; Bloomington earned second at regionals and sectionals; and Normal West got fourth at regionals.
Competition for state was two days of preliminaries, then finals. Thirty-four teams across the state competed by advancing at least one student from sectionals. The winning team was Downers Grove South High School.
More than 300 competitors made it to state in 15 events.
University High School had four entries and five students make it to finals. James Han won fourth in Impromptu Speaking, Emma Noraian and Caroline Pickering won sixth in Humorous Duet Acting, Lauren Dubravec won sixth in Informative Speaking and Jordyn Blythe won seventh in Oratorical Declamation.
Bloomington High School had one student make it to the finals. Emily King won third in Dramatic Interpretation.
Normal West had one make it to the finals. Maggie McHale took fourth in Radio Speaking.
Team results were U High placing 15th; Bloomington, 20th; and Normal West, 24th.
