BLOOMINGTON — For once, Professor Allen Guelzo was “thankful for academic dress.”

The formal graduation-style robe worn by Guelzo and others at Illinois Wesleyan University’s Founders’ Day Convocation solved the what-to-wear problem for the keynote speaker, whose luggage never arrived in Bloomington.

He almost didn’t make it, either.

“He flew out of the Detroit airport twice in five hours and never actually landed in Bloomington,” said IWU President Dick Wilson on Wednesday, thanking Guelzo for the “extraordinary effort he made just to get here.”

Guelzo flew from Philadelphia to Detroit. His initial flight from Detroit to Bloomington turned back because of snow. Eventually, he got a flight to Peoria, where he was picked up and driven to the Twin Cities.

The main regret of the Abraham Lincoln scholar was missing the opportunity to tour the Bloomington home of Lincoln’s close friend David Davis, who Lincoln appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
