Thursday night house fire in Clinton

Clinton firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire that broke out about 8 p.m. Thursday in Clinton.

CLINTON — The state fire marshal is investigating the cause of a fire that heavily damaged a vacant house.

Clinton Assistant Fire Chief Ray James suggested electricity or materials used for staining floors are to blame.

The vacant house at 209 W. South St. had just been purchased by Abe Helfand of Clinton, who was renovating it before offering it for rent. James said workers had finished staining floors around 4 p.m. Thursday and left all their materials in the kitchen.

The fire started in the kitchen, traveling to the roof and attic, James said. Other areas of the two-story frame house also were damaged, he said. No dollar estimate was available.

A neighbor reported the fire about 8 p.m.

No one was injured. Crews from Kenney, Wapella and Maroa fire departments helped the Clinton department.
