May 31, 1911: The Trotter fountain, created by Lorado Taft, was unveiled next to Withers Library. (It's still there, in what is known as Withers Park.) Also today, 65 Bloomington people were in Indianapolis for the 500-mile auto race, won by Ray Harroun in 6 hours, 48 minutes.

May 31, 1936: First Methodist Episcopal Church will mark its 100th anniversary with special services and programs today. Its first building was on Olive Street, and served from 1836 to 1851. Founding fathers James Allin and Jesse Fell were among the early members.

May 31, 1961: The police court fund has come up almost $3,000 short. The discrepancy turned up in an audit. For now it seems that the problem is with the book keeping system, rather than someone having his hand in the till.

May 31, 1986: Trans World Express will begin round trip flights between Bloomington and St. Louis tomorrow. It becomes the third commuter airline to serve Bloomington, with Air Wisconsin hopefully to come in later this year.
