100 years ago

Jan. 4, 1910: John Sullivan, a confessed bank robber in the county jail, is now charged with robbing a fellow inmate. Sullivan allegedly stole $130 from one A. Gazelle. Part of the money has been recovered but Sullivan won't say where he hid the rest of it.

75 years ago

Jan. 4, 1935: The Citizenship League of McLean County will elect officers for the coming year next Sunday. The League is an action group for local dry forces. It is involved in petition campaigns to outlaw liquor in Normal, Ellsworth, Stanford and Bellflower.

50 years ago

Jan. 4, 1960: "Dear Abby" premiered in today's Pantagraph on page 6. Today's topic: some writers think their youngsters are overworked. Seven letters were printed as readers sounded off. She answered only one, saying she has a freshman son and a senior daughter.

25 years ago

Jan. 4, 1985: Mitsubishi Motors is thinking of building an automobile plant in Bloomington-Normal. A decision is expected this spring. Other sites under consideration are in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.
