100 years ago

Dec. 30, 1911: John J. Liker, an actor staying in town, tried suicide by drinking carbolic acid and whiskey. It didn't work and he'll probably recover. William Jack (believed to be his real name) left a note indicating a woman was involved.

75 years ago

Dec. 30, 1936: A seven man crew is removing the old trolley wire now that Bloomington has all buses instead of streetcars. They are cutting it into strips of 42 inches, then bundling it. The city gets to keep the old trolley wire and will sell it for salvage.

50 years ago

Dec. 30, 1961: Dennis Arnold, 805 South Wright Street, is the new manager of the Normal Theater. He just finished a tour of duty in the reserves. The previous manager was Jack Rutledge, who has joined the Air Force.

25 years ago

Dec. 30, 1986: Roland's, long one of Bloomington's ladies' clothing stores, will soon add a men's wear section to its Eastland Mall store. The Champaign store will continue to be ladies' wear only. Roland's began over on the square in downtown Bloomington.
