May 2, 1911: Mayor Carlock transferred power to Mayor Moore in last night's city council meeting. But the new mayor is having trouble getting council to approve his appointments. There is still has no city carpenter, park commissioner, or superintendent of water and lights.

75 years ago

May 2, 1936: Marilyn Rittmiller, 11, of 901 South Allin Street, won the contest to name the orphan monkey at Miller Park Zoo. She submitted the name Mipa, and took the $15 first prize. (Originally first prize was reported as $40, but that amount also included the lesser prizes.)

50 years ago

May 2, 1961: Hats off to Charles Williams, 410 Orlando, Normal. He was the first property owner to pay his 1960 real estate taxes in person at the court house. Actually, several court house workers paid ahead of him, but Mr. Williams was the first "civilian" to pay in person.

25 years ago

May 2, 1961: Operating engineers and roofers went on strike at several local construction sites as their agreements with contractors expired. Jobs were targeted, with work continuing on other sites from Mason County to I-80. Members of other unions refused to cross the picket lines.
