100 years ago

Jan. 29, 1912: April will mark the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Shiloh during the Civil War. There will be a reunion of veterans for an observance at the battlefield in Tennessee. But so far only one or two Bloomington veterans have said they would attend.

75 years ago

Jan. 29, 1937: There was a fox hunt south of Gridley. 70 men made drives in six sections (a full section is a square mile) to hunt the foxes, and then sell the pelts to replace game the foxes destroy. For all their efforts, they bagged four foxes.

50 years ago

Jan. 29, 1962: Cold weather had forced a delay in construction of the new city hall on Olive Street. But work is under way again. Bitter cold has dogged the project since ground was broken, with the turf being too cold for shovels to penetrate.

25 years ago

Jan. 29, 1987: Bloomington school buildings don't have an asbestos problem, according to a St. Louis testing firm. Investigators targeted BHS, BJHS, Washington, Bent, and Centennial Schools. The school board still wants to go ahead with asbestos removal at Centennial.
