Jan. 21, 1915: Captain Hills, hotel owner, has an artistically furnished room at his home that is known as “the lodge.” A Peoria couple chose it as the site of their wedding, the first at the Hills home on West Jefferson Street. The Rev. Jones of First Christian performed the ceremony.
75 years ago
Jan. 21, 1940: Hall’s Coffee Shop has closed after 40 years in business in Normal. It had been one of the town’s business mainstays, with customers sometimes serving each other when the proprietor wasn’t there. Charles Hall opened the shop; his son took over four years ago.
50 years ago
Jan. 21, 1965: Jesse Sumner was sentenced to 35 to 75 years in prison for murdering Herschel Williams. Both were from Danville. Williams’ body was found in a barrel of concrete in a dump near Stanford. Sumner is already in prison for robberies in Bloomington and Heyworth.
25 years ago
Jan. 21, 1990: A survey of mayors’ salaries shows some inconsistencies and surprises. Normal’s mayor is paid $6,000, which goes to $7,200 when the next mayoral term starts in 1991. Mayors of Bloomington and Paxton make $7,200. Lincoln’s mayor will make $10,000 (base) in 1993.
