100 years ago

March 5, 1910: Word just came that Bloomington's YMCA at Washington and East Streets will be the site of the state basketball tournament next week. BHS is one of the selected teams. The others are Hinsdale, Rock Island, Nokomis, Mt. Vernon and Mt. Sterling.

75 years ago

March 5, 1935: Voters decided 1730 to 851 to return Normal to "dry territory." Also, Mayor Grant Ridenour won over challenger T.O. White. Turnout was the largest in Normal history, and city hall was the only polling place. The last ballots were counted at 5:15 a.m.

50 years ago

March 5, 1960: Former Bloomington band leader Hank Messer has been named musical director for the west coast TV show, "Kassels in the Air," featuring the Art Kassel dance band. Mr. Messer is married to the former Helen Bowen of Heyworth.

25 years ago

March 5, 1985: Governor Thompson is going to the Orient soon, and will lobby Mitsubishi Motors to finalize Bloomington-Normal as a site for the firm's new auto plant. Local officials are optimistic about Mitsubishi and are also trying to get General Motors' new Saturn plant.
