100 years ago

June 2, 1917: The government has ordered communities to sell bonds to help finance the war. Local bank representatives met this afternoon to figure out how much they need to sell. The quota will be $1.5 million. There are 35 banks in McLean County, plus those in the Twin Cities.

75 years ago

June 2, 1942: Fairview Sanatorium, the TB hospital, was assured of public support for the next 10 years. Voters approved a tax package for Fairview 1,930 to 205. Turnout was light. McLean County has over 40,000 voters. (McLean County Nursing Home is on the Fairview site now.)

50 years ago

June 2, 1967: The city has given Sunnyside neighborhood homeowners until Aug. 1 to have their bathrooms connected to a septic system or city sewers. It’s the last stage in a two-year upgrade of Sunnyside. During that time several houses have been condemned and torn down.

25 years ago

June 2, 1992: Steve Brienen, long-time Democratic sheriff of McLean County, has just turned Republican. He had been the first Democrat sheriff in 68 years. Brienen said he made the switch because over the years he had become more philosophically aligned with Republicans.
