May 4, 1911: Stephen Perrell, about 70, was in the employ of Dan Madden when he was kicked by a horse. It wasn't thought serious at first, and from his hospital bed Mr. Perrell talked about going back to work soon. But last night he unexpectedly died.

May 4, 1936: A bolt of lightning struck Emil Olsen's house at 612 West Oakland Avenue during Friday night's storm. The bolt caved in one wall of the foundation and wrecked the furnace room. No one was hurt.

May 4, 1961: Showboat opens tomorrow at Community Players Theater. But it's anyone's guess who will play the male lead. Ronal Craig had been cast but now he has laryngitis. So Unit 5 teacher Robert McFarland has been training, in case Mr. Craig can't perform.

May 4, 1986: An explosion and fire sent flames 20 feet in the air at a grain bin on the Marion Otto farm near Carlock. A faulty dryer is believed to be the cause. There were thousands of bushels of grain in the bin. But most of it was undamaged.
