100 years ago

July 30, 1917: Beginning Aug. 1 the federal government will crack down on abuse of store policies governing return of merchandise. Some will still be allowed, but a lot won’t. Klemm’s, Roland’s, Livingston’s and three other major retailers took a full-page ad to warn customers.

75 years ago

July 30, 1942: Business and civic leaders gathered at Bloomington Country Club to launch a new war bond drive. It calls for tapping every pool of idle cash for investment in the war. The main speaker was C. S. Young, president of the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago.

50 years ago

July 30, 1967: The addition to NCHS includes a carpeted library, a 3,000-seat gym, plus 19 new classrooms and labs. NCHS now becomes a two-block long facility, increasing the “hike time” between classes. So an extra minute will be added to class break time to allow for the distance.

25 years ago

July 30, 1992: Bec’s Far East Texas Grill is set to open about Aug. 15 in Normal. It’s owned by Dave and Rebecca Merritt, and will combine Texas-style chili with the kabob-style Japanese fare. Emphasis will be on carry-out service, although the eatery will have about 20 seats.
