100 years ago

Sept. 28, 1912: The widow of Fleury Colton, the fireman who recently died, will receive her husband’s full pay for the month. He was allowed $42 for 18 days, and $28 is still due her. Mr. Colton died from injuries suffered while fighting the Grand Opera House fire in 1909.

75 years ago

Sept. 28, 1937: Silent film star Jackie Coogan made a brief stop in town while en route to Chicago. Word got around and autograph seekers hounded him. Coogan led them on a chase but paused for a quick interview before he drove out of town.

50 years ago

Sept. 28, 1962: Police chased a Texas man and a Missouri woman all the way to Minonk after the two cashed bad checks in Bloomington and Normal. When they got back here to face charges the woman confessed. Police think they may have cashed at least two other bad checks.

25 years ago

Sept. 28, 1987: LeRoy grade school teacher Dawn Thompson spent summer vacation touring Alaska, Canada and the Pacific Northwest. She accumulated a lot of souvenirs. This fall she’s organizing them into teaching tools for her students.
