100 years ago

Aug. 2, 1917: The city has taken delivery of seven new garbage cans for strategic positioning in the downtown area. Eight others are already in place on the courthouse square. The question of keeping the business district in a “cleanly condition” is no small matter.

75 years ago

Aug. 2, 1942: Home construction in town is grinding to a halt because of war restrictions. One house is being built in Bloomington at 514 S. Mercer St. Normal has four, all in the Walglen subdivision. They’re the last five homes to be built here for the duration.

50 years ago

Aug. 2, 1967: Two NCHS graduates were named king and queen of the McLean County Fair. Dan Slagell of Hudson is an eight year 4-H veteran. The queen, Linda Mehlberg of Normal, has been in 4-H for nine years and plans to attend ISU. Slagell plans to attend U of I.

25 years ago

Aug. 2, 1992: WGLT Radio, the ISU station, made two major changes. The daytime format has gone from classical to jazz. Blues and jazz have been part of the evening fare. And the station’s power has been upped to 25,000 watts, allowing it to reach places like Decatur and Joliet.
