BLOOMINGTON — Central Illinois will observe Memorial Day with a number of events, including parades, prayers, contests and food.

In Bloomington, the parade steps off at 9 a.m. from the intersection of Front and Madison streets; line-up begins at 8 a.m.

The route is west on Front to Lee Street, south on Lee to Wood Street, then west on Wood to Miller Park.

A ceremony follows at the bandstand, with a keynote address Amvets State Commander William Buckner. A wreath-laying ceremony follows at the Korean-Vietnam Memorial located in the park. In case of rain, ceremonies will be at the National Guard Armory, 1616 S. Main St.

Members of VFW Post 454 will meet at 1 p.m. at the grave of John Kruse in Danvers Cemetery. American Legion Post 635 will conduct services at noon at Evergreen Cemetery, followed immediately by a service at Randolph Cemetery.


LeRoy: 8 a.m. at Gilmore Cemetery, with LeRoy American Legion Post 79; 10 a.m., parade; 11 a.m., Oak Grove Cemetery.

Farmer City: 10 a.m. at downtown Central Park, conducted by American Legion family and the VFW; march follows to city cemetery with tribute at tomb of the unknown; “Patriots on Wheels” judging and contest follows, downtown; alternate site, Farmer City American Legion.

Pontiac: Parade, downtown Pontiac.

Saybrook: 10 a.m., Riverside Cemetery, Saybrook, and 10:30 a.m., Cheney’s Grove Township Cemetery, both conducted by Saybrook American Legion Post 427 and Sons of American Legion Post 427.

Waynesville: 10 a.m., Evergreen, Union, Rockcreek and Fairview cemeteries (in order), all in Waynesville; return to American Legion Post 1189 for reading, certificates, lunch.

Eureka: 10:30 a.m., parade steps off from Eureka High School; participants should arrive by 10 a.m. with line-up at 10:20 a.m.; flags and candy provided; 11 a.m. service, Olio Cemetery, with speaker Richard Wherley. In case of rain, service moves to high school auditorium.

Lincoln: 10:30 a.m., service at American Legion Post 263, followed by lunch; Airport Daze, noon-9 p.m., Logan County Airport, with program, ceremonies, free and paid airplane rides, barbecue fundraiser, hangar dance, antique car display, vendor displays.

Chenoa: 11:30 a.m., Chenoa Cemetery with Chenoa VFW Post 8350; speaker, Prairie Central High School band; veterans’ recognition; lighted flag display.

June 5

Clinton: 12:30 p.m., potluck meal, Rucker Chapel Church in Solomon neighborhood; 2 p.m. address; 3 p.m., cemetery rites by Joe William Post 55, Farmer City.
