NORMAL — Adam Maurer's parents were still pondering a middle name for him Thursday, but his entrance into the world at 12:57 a.m. positioned him as the Twin Cities' first baby of 2015.
Erin Maurer and her husband, Shawn, of Normal, were settling into their role as first-time parents after a full day of activity that produced the 8-pound 12 ounce baby, who also is the family's first grandson. He will join two girl cousins, age 5 years and 7 months.
"He's already a celebrity. He's a little adventure," Erin Maurer said of the male addition.
Adam was content to sleep through his first media interview.
"His true personality will come out at home," said the new mother, who plans to take 12 weeks off work from her job at State Farm.
With Dec. 30 as the anticipated due date for their baby, the Maurers planned a low-key holiday season.
"We usually drive home to see family in Knoxville, but this year everybody came to us," said Shawn Maurer, a civil engineer.
"And we didn't make New Year's plan, just in case," said Erin Maurer.
New Year's Eve started with the couple's 8 a.m. arrival at the hospital.
Shawn Maurer's wish for his son is simple: "I want him to be happy and healthy."
The proverbial scrutiny of infants for signs of each parent's traits was settled early by the paternal grandparents.
"As soon as Shawn's parents saw him, they said he looked just like Shawn when he was a baby, but with hair," said the baby's mother.
Before Adam's birth, the Maurers shared the fact that they knew their baby was a boy. The name — a first for the family — was kept a secret. The middle name was undecided, but a choice is expected before mother and baby go home on Saturday.
For the Maurer family, the good fortune of their New Year's Day will be cause for a double celebration in the coming years.
"We feel really lucky he's here," said Erin Maurer.
