BLOOMINGTON — Harvey R. Mays, 89, Bloomington, died at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday (May 5, 2010) at his home.
His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bloomington, with the Rev. Allen Steinbeck officiating. Burial will be in Park Hill Cemetery, Bloomington, with military rites accorded. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church.
Carmody-Flynn Williamsburg Funeral Home, Bloomington, is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, OSF Hospice or Community Cancer Center.
Harvey was born Aug. 9, 1920, in Normal, the son of Richard T. and Frances Gehrke Mays. He married Dorothy M. Wichmann on March 8, 1942, in Rossville, Ga. She survives.
He is also survived by two sons, Dennis (June) Mays, Kappa, and Larry (Cheryl) Mays, Bloomington; seven grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Helen Mays, Normal.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lawrence, Merle and Glen Mays; and one sister, Lorene White.
Harvey was a graduate of Normal Community High School and served in the U.S. Army’s 33rd Division in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a general contractor and had worked for Sears for 13 years. He also worked for Illinois State University for more than 20 years, building scenery for plays in the theater department, retiring in 1982.
Harvey was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Bloomington, and a lifetime member of VFW Post 454, Bloomington. He was an avid gardener, enjoyed yard work, was a shade tree mechanic and repaired body work on trucks.
