NORMAL — Charles Arthur Lindberg, 63, of Momence, son and brother of Normal residents, died at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday (Jan. 21, 2015) at Good Shepherd Manor in Momence.
Charlie had experienced deteriorating health over the past two years, but his spirits remained high every day of his life. It was his final blessing that he passed peacefully in his sleep, with a hospice nurse at his side.
Born in Chicago on Dec. 8, 1951, Charles was the youngest of five sons of Wally (deceased February of 2009) and Harriett Lindberg. Harriett survives in Normal. Brothers Richard (Felicia) Lindberg, Wautoma, Wis., and Terry (Debbie) Lindberg, Normal, also survive. Brothers Edward and James are deceased.
Wally and Harriett worked hard to provide support and opportunities for Charles so that, despite having Down syndrome, he could enjoy life to its fullest. Charlie was well-traveled, especially enjoying long, warm summers at his parents’ home in Venice, Fla. If there was a dance floor, he was on it. If there was music, he was singing it. If he met a stranger, he made a new friend. He was a social butterfly without an unkind word for anyone.
Charles participated in many Special Olympics over the years, earning medals in swimming, track and bowling. He was also skilled in American Sign Language and helped hearing- and speech-challenged residents communicate.
One of the original residents of Good Shepherd Manor in Momence, Charles was proud to call the manor his home for the past 43 years. His family deeply appreciates the loving care and support provided by the brothers and staff of Good Shepherd over the years, and for the support of Kankakee Valley Hospice in Charlie’s final days.
Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Manor, Box 260, Momence, IL 60954.
