EMDEN — Christian Eldon “Bud” Westen, 92, of Emden, passed away Thursday (Jan. 1, 2015) at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield.
Christian was born Aug. 10, 1922, the son of Andrew C. Westen and Rena H. Bruns Westen. He married Anna Clara Kutz on Feb. 27, 1949, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Emden.
He is survived by his wife, Anna, Emden; four children, Gloria (Tom) Kelroy, Fond du Lac, Wis.; Larry “Moe” (Joyce) Westen, Emden; Clarke (Tammy) Westen, Kenney; and Rita (Larry) Haedicke, East Peoria; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; one sister, Irene, Emden; and one brother, Loren (Shirley) Westen, Emden.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Fauline (Alfred) Johnson and Agnes (Virgil) Marten; and his son, Dennis.
Christian and Anna farmed a Scully lease for 50 years, retiring in 1998. In 1977 and 1978, he and family built the home on the farm and lived there until they moved to town. They retired in Emden and enjoyed their family, visiting friends and relatives.
Christian was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, the Brotherhood, and served as trustee and usher. He was a Farm Bureau member, enjoyed camping, Linpro Square Dance Club and playing cards. He also liked gardening.
His service will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Emden. Burial will follow at Hartsburg Union Cemetery. Visitation will be 8:30 to 10 a.m. Monday at the church. Arrangements were entrusted to Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home, Lincoln. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Improvement Fund.
