D. Arlo Leary

BLOOMINGTON — D. Arlo Leary, 91, a life-long Bloomington resident, died at 7:36 a.m. Thursday (June 21, 2012) at Heritage Health, Normal, surrounded by his family.

His memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Trinity Church, Bloomington, with the Rev. Julius Turyatoranwa officiating. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Merna, where military rites will be accorded by the Bloomington-Normal American Legion Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Carmody-Flynn Williamsburg Funeral Home, Bloomington, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimers Care Unit at Heritage Health, 509 N. Adelaide Street, Normal, IL 61761 or Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

Daniel Arlo was born May 26, 1921, in Bloomington, the son of Daniel and Kathryn Doyle Leary. He graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1939. He married Eileen Lacey on July 24, 1942, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Merna. Arlo enlisted in the Army Air Force in September 1942. He served during World War II as a B-29 flight engineer for the 7th Ferrying Command. He was discharged as a Staff Sergeant on Feb. 1, 1946. Upon his return to Bloomington, Arlo worked for the Eureka Company where he retired after forty-three years of service.

Arlo was a life member and former officer of the BPO Elks Lodge 281. He was voted Elk of the Year in 1989-1990 for his volunteerism. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and the VFW. For many years Arlo enjoyed traveling with Eileen to the annual reunion of the 7th Ferrying Command. Arlo was most proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed sharing his love of Cubs baseball with them. He also enjoyed golf and holiday family gatherings in California.

Arlo is survived by his wife of nearly seventy years, Eileen. He was the loving father of one son, David (Vicki Keller), Livermore, Calif.; and one daughter, Jane (Ted Gross), Schaumburg. He was the grandfather of Jamie Leary-Erickson (Jamie Erickson), San Diego, Calif.; and Matthew Leary (Julia), Livermore, Calif. Arlo was loved dearly by his great-grandchildren Marissa, Brenden, Reilly, Bryanna, Brody and Madison.

His surviving siblings are Laverne Evans, Normal; Warren Leary, Ellsworth; Pat Rochelle (Victor), Normal; and sisters-in-law Alice Leary, Normal; Janice Leary, LeRoy; and Jane Klein, Normal.

Arlo was preceded in death by his parents, uncle, Richard Leary; sisters, Marjory Cooley and Lorene Thomas; and brothers, Eldon and Duane “Squirt” Leary; and in-laws Ronald and Rochelle Lacey, Bill Cooley, Bill Evans, Russell Thomas, Marilyn Leary, Dick and Alice Lacey and Chuck Klein.

The family extends sincere appreciation to their extended family, friends and staff of Heritage Health, Normal, for the loving care and support they provided Arlo throughout his extended illness.
