Also surviving are a son, Jim Phillips; a brother, Dave (Barbara) Phillips; a sister, Susie (Jerald) Newkirk; a niece, Jacqui (Mike) Heath; and two nephews, Brooks Phillips and Joel Newkirk. He was also blessed with a great-nephew and a great-niece, Cole and Kylie Phillips. Also surviving are his aunts and uncles, Ruth Rinn, Joan Ayers, Joe Kelso and Pat Kelso; and numerous cousins.
Don was very proud of two accomplishments in his life here on Earth. The first and most important is his son, Jim. He often said that Jim was the greatest blessing of his entire life and he loved him dearly. The second was his chance to be clean and sober. His sobriety birthday was Feb. 7, 1987, which made the last 23 years, 5 months and 15 days of his life a special gift. Reflecting on his son and his sobriety helped him realize what a lucky guy he was.
If you know anyone with cancer or Alzheimer’s, give them a huge hug (and their caretakers, too).
