BLOOMINGTON — Donald E. Prather, 83, of Bloomington died at 6:18 a.m. Friday (June 1, 2012) at his residence.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington. The Rev. Ed Herald will officiate. Inurnment will follow at Park Hill Mausoleum, Bloomington, with military honors by the Bloomington/Normal American Legion Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the memorial home. Memorials may be made to the Community Cancer Center, Normal.
He was born on July 21, 1928, in Atlanta, to Vernon R. and Ketta B. Lovins Prather. He married Mary Ellyn Manfroi on Jan. 1, 1953, in Piggott, Ark. She survives.
Also surviving are his children, Marie (David) Nelson, Des Moines, Iowa; Susan (Jack) Wood, Bloomington; Steve Prather, Savannah, Ga.; and Amy (Larry) Orris, Bloomington; grandchildren, Meredith (Scott) Atkins, Megan Wood (fiance Russell Burton), Benjamin (Mindy) Prather, Alexander Prather, Nick Jolley, Josh (Jamie) Jolley, Luke (Kristin) Jolley, Zach Orris, Cody Orris and Jake Orris; great-grandchildren, Zoe and Taylor, Ashton, Cullen, Kasen, Benjamin, Mason and Bentley; a brother, Wayne H. (Linda) Prather, Peoria; and Don’s dog Lucy.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Billy V. Prather
Don worked as an operating engineer with Local 649, Peoria, for many years prior to retirement.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Louis E. Davis Post 56 American Legion and John H. Kraus Post 454, V.F.W., both in Bloomington.
Don was an avid outdoorsman, and especially loved hunting, golf, gardening and spending time with his family. His life touched many.
