MASON CITY - Dorothy "Grandma" Marie Liesman, 89, of Mason City died at 6:05 p.m. Friday (June 15, 2007) at the Mason City Area Nursing Home.
She was born Nov. 20, 1917, a daughter of Mike and Alma Parr Mathoney in rural Mason City. She married Paul "Fritz" Liesman on Feb. 16, 1939, in New London, Mo. He died Dec. 13, 1975. -;
Survivors are a daughter, Joyce (Neil) Conklen, and a son, Jim (Carolyn) Liesman, both of Mason City; four grandchildren, Christy (Bruce) Miller of Peoria; Amy (David) Dowell of Greenview; and Clint (Kate) Liesman and Clay Liesman of Mason City; five great-grandchildren, Casey, Jenna and Luke Miller of Peoria, and Lane and Ellis Dowell of Greenview; and a brother, Kenneth (Mary) Mathoney, Mason City. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Jack; two grandchildren, Danny and Jean Ann Conklen; a sister, Helen; and an infant brother and infant sister.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Happy Home HCE and the Red Hat Club. She was an avid sports fan, supported all sports programs, was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame, was the No. 1 Fan of Illini Central, and was a cook at VanTine's Feed Co. for many years. She was known for her love of baking, including coconut cream pie and cakes for all occasions. She loved redbirds and taking walks around Mason City.
Her service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Mason City United Methodist Church, with Nash Shawgo officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hurley Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to her church, IC Athletic Boosters or Mason City Area Nursing Home. Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City is in charge of arrangements.
