NORMAL — Edgar M. “Ed” Ward, 81, Normal, formerly of El Paso, died at 9:20 p.m. Thursday (March 7, 2013) at Heartland Health Care, Normal.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Cross Point Church of God, Bloomington, with the Rev. Kevin Summers officiating.
Graveside service with military rites will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Farmington Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.
Memorials may be made to the church. Calvert-Johnson & Froelich Memorial Home, El Paso, is in charge of arrangements.
Ed was born Nov. 25, 1931, in Springfield, the son of Edward and Lillie Brock Ward. He married Vera Mae Shofner on July 5, 1957, in Springfield.
She survives along with five children Gladys (Steve) Briggs, Madison, Wis.; Carolyn Ward, Springfield; Nancy (David) Gudino, Basking Ridge, N.J.; Jill (Joshua Green) Ward, Los Angeles, Calif.; and Gregory (Karen Osness) Ward, Kent, Wash. He has seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Ed was a member of Cross Point Church of God in Bloomington and over the years served as church treasurer, taught Sunday school and drove for the church bus ministry.
He was a graduate of Brown’s Business College. He worked as an accountant for GTE for over 30 years and the National Exchange Carrier Association (NECA) for 10 years.
Ed and Vera enjoyed traveling on cruise ships and visited five continents.
He was also a shade tree mechanic. Ed was a train steam engine enthusiast, which started while he worked for the Chicago and Illinois Midland (C&IM) Railroad. Ed was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean conflict.
