BLOOMINGTON — Eldon R. Zimmerman Sr., 90, of Birmingham, Ala., formerly of Bloomington, was born Dec. 24, 1926, in Washington, and died Feb 8, 2017, in Birmingham, Ala.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946, worked for State Farm for 40 years and was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi. He was a member of Toastmasters International and achieved the level of Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM).
He also worked as disaster coordinator to help shape and form Lutheran Ministries of Alabama Disaster Relief Organization. He attended Shades Valley Lutheran Church for more than 60 years.
He was preceded in death by one son, Eldon Richard Zimmerman Jr.; one sister, Loretta Zimmerman Ahlstrom; and one brother, Marvin Zimmerman.
He is survived by three sons, Carl D. Henson, Orville D. (Jean) Henson and Daniel C. (Brenda) Zimmerman; one daughter, Louella Zimmerman (Dale) Wood; daughter-in-law, Lynn Armstrong Zimmerman; three sisters, Ruth Zimmerman, Kathleen Zimmerman Kaufmann and Aldine Zimmerman (Lloyd) Combs; 25 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
His memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Shades Valley Lutheran Church, Homewood, Ala.
