NORMAL — Elizabeth “Betty" Tobin Kessinger, 92, of Normal, passed away Thursday (Jan. 8, 2015) at McLean County Nursing Home in Normal.
She was born Elizabeth McMurray on Jan. 1, 1923, the oldest of nine children. “Liz,” as she was known to her family, was always there to help her brothers and sisters when they needed something. She bought everything from toys, food and clothes to furniture.
She married Bernard Tobin in 1946 in Wisconsin. Together they started Tobin's Ranch House, now the Ozark House. She was passionate about cooking and will be remembered for all the wonderful recipes she passed down to family and friends.
She later married William Kessinger on May 22, 1964. She and Bill both worked at Illinois State University until they retired.
Betty loved NASCAR, the Bulls and baseball. She also liked watching game shows, playing cards and bingo.
She had lived at McLean County Nursing Home since 2010 and continued to stay involved in many of the activities provided there.
She accepted Jesus Christ into her heart on May 10, 1976.
She is survived by her daughter, Ellen (Randy) Paul, Bloomington, and her daughter-in-law, Mary Beth Tobin, Normal. Also surviving are six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Her son, Jim Tobin, and her husband, Bill Kessinger, preceded her in death.
We will hold her in our hearts until the time we all meet again.
A celebration of her life will be from 10 a.m. Monday until the 11:30 a.m. service at East Lawn Funeral Home, Bloomington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sunshine Acres Orphanage in Mesa, Ariz., or McLean County Nursing Home in Normal.
