GIBSON CITY - Elmo M. "Bake" Schmidt, 85, Gibson City, died at 10:58 a.m. Saturday (June 2, 2007) at his home in Gibson City.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Lamb Funeral Home in Gibson City with Pastor Steve McClarey officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday before the memorial service.

Mr. Schmidt was born May 7, 1922, in Anchor, a son of John and Laura Gottschalk Schmidt. He married Mary A. Smock on Sept. 25, 1954, in Gibson City. She survives in Gibson City.

Also surviving are a son, Kim (Libby) Schmidt, Hacienda Heights, Calif.; a stepson, Charles Matthews, Lake Worth, Fla.; two grandchildren, Lauren Schmidt, Hacienda Heights, Calif., and Chuck Matthews, Bloomington; and a brother, Lawrence Schmidt of Austin, Texas.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.

Mr. Schmidt graduated from Saybrook High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in England and France. He worked at the Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul for 35 years.

He was a member of the Gibson City Bible Church and the Lee Lowery American Legion Post 568 in Gibson City. He was an avid Chicago Bulls fan.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
