FLANAGAN - Evelyn V. Monk, 96, Flanagan, died at 4:50 p.m. Friday (Feb. 24, 2006) at Beulah Land Christian Home, Flanagan.
Her memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Calvert & Froelich Memorial Home, Flanagan, with the Rev. Heidi Punt officiating. Cremation rites will be accorded. Graveside inurnment will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Center Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Flanagan Ambulance Service.
She was born Nov. 28, 1909, in Goodrich Township, near Deloit, Iowa, the daughter of Samuel and Tabitha Winey Anderson. She married John H. Monk on Nov. 23, 1959, in the Lutheran Church in Flanagan. He died on Dec. 31, 1980.
Surviving are one sister, Rachel Lilleholm, Denison, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews and their families.
Evelyn was educated in Iowa schools and graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught school for several years in one room schools in Crawford County, Iowa. In 1942 she attended telegraph school in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She then went to work for Illinois Central Railroad as an agent and telegraph operator. She served in that capacity at Illinois depots at Fisher, DeWitt, Onarga, Cabery, Kempton, Birkbeck, Farmer City, Savoy, Buckley, Clifton, Shabary, Sullivan, Monee, in Illinois and also at Morgantown and Bargersville in Indiana. After her retirement in 1964, she made her home with John on the Monk farm north of Flanagan, living there until 1986 when she moved to Flanagan. She was a member of the Methodist Church all her life.
