STREATOR — Francis A. “Bud” Hatzer, 77, of Streator, passed away Friday (Jan. 16, 2015) at Parker Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Streator.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael the Archangel Parish Church, Streator. Msgr. Philip Halfacre will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator. The rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. Fourth-degree members of Streator Assembly 2109 of the Knights of Columbus honor guard will be present during the visitation.
Burial will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Streator. Pallbearers will be his sons, Scott and Randy Hatzer; his grandson, Zachary Billyard; cousins, Denny and Jeff Hatzer; and a longtime friend, Robert Dzurisin. Third-degree members of Knights of Columbus Council No. 790 will serve as honorary pallbearers. Full military rites will be accorded by members of Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492.
Born Feb. 19, 1937, in Streator, he was the son of Francis J. and Gertrude Devera Hatzer. He married Sharon M. Sabol on June 18, 1960, at St. Patrick’s Church in Minonk. She survives in Streator.
He is also survived by sons, Scott (Kelly) Hatzer, Joliet, and Randy (Naomi) Hatzer, Streator; grandchildren, Brianna Rechichar, Alyssa Billyard and Zachary Billyard; one great-grandchild, Lillian Hillier; his brother-in-law, Byron (Joy) Sabol, Florida; his sister-in-law, Bernadette Oltman, Minonk; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Patrick Hatzer in infancy; and a brother-in-law, Tom Bakalar.
Born and raised in Streator, he attended St. Stephen’s grade school and graduated from Streator High School, Class of 1954. He served in the U.S. Army for two years. He was stationed in Fort Lewis in Washington.
He worked at Owens Illinois Glass Co. for 46 years in the mold shop, retiring in 2000. He was a member of the former St. Stephen’s Church and currently belonged to St. Michael the Archangel Parish. He was a member of Msgr. George A. Dzuryo Knights of Columbus Council No. 790 and Fourth-degree Streator Assembly 2109 of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Sons and Friends of Erin.
Bud was active in his church and co-chaired the Pastor’s and Men’s Communion Breakfast for many years. He loved to golf and bowl and was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus golf and bowling leagues. Bud loved spending time at his cabin in Wisconsin with his family and friends.
