HEYWORTH — Gary M. Schmidt, 64, of Heyworth, passed away at 12:55 a.m. Friday (Jan. 23, 2015) at Farmer City Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at United Church of Heyworth. The Rev. Amanda Richards will officiate. Burial will be in Randolph Township Memorial Cemetery, Heyworth, with military rites accorded. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home, Heyworth, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Heyworth Summer League, McLean County Pheasants Forever or United Church of Heyworth.
He was born Nov. 11, 1950, in Bloomington, to Gerhardt and Wynoma M. Brown Schmidt. He married Jean A. Calhoun Oct. 3, 1970, in Bloomington. She survives in Heyworth.
Also surviving are two sons, Reid Martin Schmidt, Chicago, and Nicholas Ryan Schmidt, Bloomington; one daughter, Angela Nichol Schmidt Tiller, Heyworth; two grandchildren, Luke David Tiller and Aubrey Jean Tiller, both of Heyworth; one brother, Michael (Barbara) Schmidt, Normal; and one sister, Deanna (Bob) Carlson, Corona Del Mar, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Gary attended Trinity Lutheran School and Normal Community High School. He was a member of United Church of Heyworth, McLean County Pheasants Forever and Carl E. Miller American Legion Post No. 624, Heyworth. He was a past 4-H Extension Council board member and a member of the American Rabbit Breeders Association. He worked 32 years for Verizon, retiring in 2002. He coached Heyworth Summer League for 20 years and was an IHSA basketball referee.
Gary lived his life to its fullest through his love of his dog, hunting and sports. He cherished his time with friends and family.
His family would like to express their thanks to Farmer City Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center for the devoted care they gave Gary over the past five years, especially to Pam, Tabitha, Mandy and Cheryl.
