ELLSWORTH - Gerald L. “Jerry” Smith, 57, of Ellsworth, died at 8:58 a.m. Wednesday (Feb. 8, 2006) in Monticello.
A funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Mackey-Wright Funeral Home in Monticello. The Rev. Steve Ingram and the Rev. Jim Dalrymple will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in DeLand Cemetery in DeLand. Memorials may be made to Carle Hospice or Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
He was born Nov. 12, 1948, in Monticello to Glenn A. and Grace J. Davis Smith. He attended ISU in Normal.
He is survived by his mother, Grace J. Smith, Monticello; two brothers, Ronald (Dee Ann) Smith, Monticello and Dale (Vicky) Smith, Morton; four nephews, Jeff Smith, DeLand; Justin Smith, Montgomery, Ala.; Matt Smith, Morton; and Toby Smith, Pontiac; and one niece, Kristin Railey, Clariton, Pa.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Mr. Smith was a licensed plumber and worked for Dave's Plumbing in Bloomington-Normal. He also farmed in the DeLand area. He traveled the Rocky Mountains from Colorado to Canada. He enjoyed playing chess, softball and basketball; however, he was most commonly known for his mastery of the game of Scrabble. His other hobbies included photography and gardening.
