BLOOMINGTON — Gilbert "Gil" Slagel passed peacefully April 4, 2017, in Bend, Ore. He was born Sept. 3, 1932, in Bloomington, to Floyd and Blanche Slagel. Gil attended Bloomington High School and received his bachelor of science degree from the University of Nebraska. He was a proud and die-hard Cubs, Bears and Huskers fan.
Gil and his wife of 65 years, Pat (White), were married in Bloomington prior to his two-year Army service. His 40-year State Farm career began at the home office in Bloomington in 1956. He, Pat and family had five moves through his career with State Farm: Lincoln, Neb.; Greeley, Colo.; Bloomington; Salem, Ore.; and finally to southern California in 1983.
Gil and Pat retired to Palm Desert, Calif., where they resided until 2014, when they returned to Oregon (Redmond). Gil served as president of South Salem Rotary and was a proud and dedicated Rotarian for 35 years. He also served on the board of the Sister Cities Committee in Palm Desert.
Gil was affectionately known by many for his gift of gab, his work ethic, his vision, and his capacity for mentoring his colleagues. Gil did not know a stranger: Everyone was told a story or two by him at every encounter.
Gil is survived by daughters Jan Carlson (Dave), Lori Roach (Rob), Keri Serrano, and son Brad, as well as six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Eldest son, Mark, predeceased him. Gil also has two surviving siblings, Warren and Verna.
The family greatly appreciates the love and support of Partners in Care and Hospice of Bend.
