NORMAL — Helen M. Fitzgerald, 91, of Bloomington, passed away at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday (Jan. 27, 2015) at Heritage Health, Normal.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Bloomington, with Rev. Jeffrey Windy officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Bloomington. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington, with a rosary service at 6 p.m.
Memorials may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society or Central Catholic High School.
Helen was born Dec. 13, 1923, in Carlisle, Pa., the daughter of Earl and Ethel Walker Roney. She married John Fitzgerald on April 12, 1947, in Carlisle, Pa. He preceded her in death Aug. 11, 1987.
Survivors include her children, Rita Conlon and Kevin (Susan) Fitzgerald, all of Bloomington; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Evie Duncan, Chandler, Ariz., and Joanne (John) Costedio, Sun City, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Terry and Tim Fitzgerald.
Helen received her nurse’s training at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, Md., and remained a member of the Mercy Hospital Nurses Association. In Bloomington, she worked for St. Joseph's Hospital, Dr. McGinnis and Heritage Manor Nursing Home. She became Bloomington’s first city nurse and retired in 1981.
Helen was a proud breast cancer survivor and was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
Helen was a woman of many interests but, above all, she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and will be dearly missed.
