NORMAL - Helen M. Swanson Peterson, 90, Normal, died at 5:55 a.m. Saturday (Feb. 11, 2006) at 509 N. Adelaide St., Normal.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1510 N. Main St., Normal, with Pastor Jeff Henricks officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. At a later date, a memorial service will be at United Lutheran in Red Wing, Minn., with the inurnment at Oakwood Cemetery.
Beck Memorial Home, Bloomington, is in charge of arrangements.
Helen was born June 12, 1915, at Welch, Minn., a daughter of Linus T. Swanson and Esther Akenson Swanson. The fourth of five children, Helen lived most of her life in Red Wing, Minn. She was married to Maynard W. Peterson on Feb. 1, 1936, in Los Angeles, Calif. Maynard passed away Dec. 30, 1970, in Red Wing, Minn.
Helen was a high school graduate and homemaker. She faithfully sent letters and cards to friends and family all her life. She also liked to read, sew, bake and garden. Helen was always active in the church: Altar guild, Bible study, funeral committee, quilting and volunteered in the office. She faithfully visited in nursing homes.
Helen is survived by daughters, Joanne Deavers, Normal, and Mary (John) Bean, Albuquerque, N.M.; sons, Dave, Bloomington, and John (Louise), Darwin, Australia. Also surviving are one sister, Marian (Glen) Bjorklund, Red Wing; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Preceding Helen in death were sisters, Ruth (Bill) Harlis and Violet (Harold) Dawson; brother, Ralph (Marie) Swanson; one great-grandson and one great-niece.
Helen, Maynard and children moved to Lexington, in 1949 and became charter members of Our Savior Lutheran Church in 1958 where she was presently a member. They returned to Red Wing in 1960.
Helen requested memorials to be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church or to United Lutheran, 628 W. Fifth St., Red Wing, MN 55066.
