DEER CREEK — James B. Smith, 83, Deer Creek, died at 10:36 p.m. Monday (May 23, 2011) at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, Peoria.
His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Morton, with the Rev. Don Burkhart and the Rev. Jack Wolfe officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be at Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, at a later date. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to the service Friday, both at the funeral home. Cremation will be accorded following the service.

He was born Nov. 10, 1927, in Chicago, son of Byrd and Caroline Mae Burton Smith. He married Nancy Adams on Aug. 22, 1953, in Glenview.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy Smith, Deer Creek; three daughters, Patti (Steve) Carroll, Mackinaw; and Carol (William) Boyle and Susie (Bernie) Mayle, both of Schaumburg; seven grandchildren, Tom (Jennifer) Carroll, Nancy (Matt) Copple, Chris (Ashley) Boyle, Mike (Teresa) Boyle, Karl (Nicole) Mayle, Theresa Mayle and Rebecca Mayle; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, George H. (JoAnne) Smith, Edwardsburg, Mich.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
James worked as an electrical engineer with Phoenix Closures in Chicago for 32 years, retiring in 1978.
He was a member of Deer Creek United Methodist Church and the American Association of Electrical Engineers. He sang bass and was also a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society.
He enjoyed woodworking.
