MAHOMET - John Matthews, 16, of Mahomet died 12:16 a.m. Friday (April 7, 2006) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

A private family service will be conducted. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Mahomet. A celebration of life and memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at New Horizon Methodist Church, 3002 W. Bloomington Road, Champaign. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Blair-Owens Funeral Home, 102 E. Dunbar, Mahomet. Memorial gifts may be given to the Central Illinois Downs Syndrome Organization, P.O. Box 595, Normal, IL 61761, or the Mahomet-Seymour Special Olympics, 605 E. Willow St., Normal, IL 61761.

John was born Feb. 14, 1990, in Bloomington, a son of James and Mary Ann Taffe Matthews. They survive.

Also surviving are his paternal grandmother, Edythe Matthews, Redford, Mich.; maternal grandmother, Francis Taffe, Hillsdale, Mich.; a brother, Russell Matthews, Ann Arbor, Mich.; and a sister, Courtney Matthews, Sweet Briar, Va.

John was a member of New Horizon Methodist Church, where he was involved with the youth group and the Wednesday night church supper. He was active with both the drama club and the choir at his high school in Mahomet.

He was heavily involved with the Special Olympics, where he competed in snowshoeing, bowling, track and basketball, earning state medals in snowshoeing, bowling and track. He always enjoyed movies and books about adventures; he was especially taken with “The Chronicles of Narnia.”

John was involved with the 4-H Club, where he won a Distinguished Clover award for a dog obedience class with the family dog. He volunteered as a reading mentor for younger children and had a great passion for swimming.
