MELVIN - John W. Pool, 87, Melvin, died at 9:10 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 14, 2006) at Provena Covenant Medical Center in Urbana.
He was born Dec. 21, 1918, in Piper City, a son of John S. and Ida Kridner Pool. He married Ruth Dueringer on Oct. 10, 1942, in Melvin. She died Jan. 18, 2005.
Surviving are two sons, Douglas (Vicky) Pool, Gaithersburg, Md., and Greg (Sharon) Pool, Melvin; two daughters, Joy (Don) Ahearn, Dwight and Donna (Dennis) Lee, Melvin; 11 grandchildren, Alexia, Christopher and Jonathan Pool, all of Gaithersburg, Md.; Brad Ahearn, Las Vegas, Nev.; Mary Ahearn, San Antonio, Texas; Kathleen (Patrick) Sweeney, Normal; Amy (Jim) Barden, Urbana; Todd Lee, Kara, Lauren and Mark Pool, all of Melvin; and one great-grandchild, Emily Barden.
He was preceded in death by his parents and eight brothers and sisters.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Melvin United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Karen Martin officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. Masonic rites will be accorded at 8 p.m. Friday by the Melvin Masonic Lodge. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Melvin Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Melvin VFW and Legion. Memorials may be made to Gibson Area Hospital in Gibson City or Melvin United Methodist Church.

He was a lifelong member of Melvin United Methodist Church. He belonged to Illinois Christmas Tree Growers Association, Ford County Historical Society, Melvin VFW Post, Masonic Lodge and Provena Hospital Support Group. He served in World War II in the China-Burma-India Theater as a hospital supply sergeant. He farmed and sold agriculture chemicals. He established Pools' Pine Acres, a cut your own Christmas tree patch.
