NORMAL — John Alden Wiederhirn, 79, a former resident of Normal, passed away Friday (Dec. 16, 2005) at his home, 209 Swisher, Danville, following a long illness.
He was born May 22, l926, in Chicago, the son of Helen M. and John A. Wiederhirn Sr.They preceded him in death. Mr. Wiederhirn married the former Virginia Liston, a Bloomington native, on May 5, 1962, in Chicago.She survives.
Also surviving is his son, John F. Wiederhirn, Seattle, Wash.; his brother, Fred E. Buck (Juanita), Fallbrook,Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. Local residents surviving are his sister-in-law, Phyllis Liston, and two nephews, Jonathon Liston and Geoffrey Liston, all of Normal.
Mr. Wiederhirn was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 8th Army in the Asia-Pacific theater and the occupation of Japan.Following World War II, he attended Northwestern University where he majored in piano and compositionreceiving his degree in 1952.He later returned to Northwestern majoring in business and worked as an accountant.His primary joy in life was music, ranging from opera and classical to the Broadway musical and jazz.
He was an elder of the Presbyterian Church and in his last days of life took comfort in the knowledge that "whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's."
He will be cremated with a private graveside committal service at a later date. There will be no visitation.
