NORMAL - Joseph W. Rivard, 90, Normal, died at 4:38 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 22, 2006) at Heritage Manor in Bloomington.

There will be no local service. Cremation rites will be accorded with inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., at a later date. Kibler-Smith Memorial Home, Bloomington, is in charge of arrangements.

Joe was born Oct. 10, 1915, in Detroit, Mich., a son of Joseph F. Rivard and Marietta Hurley Rivard. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force and later became a logistics technician with the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB in Fairborn, Ohio, for 32 years. While at Wright-Patterson he was involved with the development of the Mace, Matador and Sidewinder missile programs. He also was a program manager for the procurement, delivery and installation of electronic communications systems for the U.S. Air Force troops stationed in Vietnam. On July 12, 1941, Joe married Mary Jane “Jerry” Matheson. She preceded him in death Jan. 1, 1998.

Joe was an avid boatsman and sport fisherman. He taught navigation-piloting and small boat handling for the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. He successfully navigated and traveled the St. Lawrence Seaway in a 23-foot powerboat. He was a past commander of the Marine City Yacht Club in Marblehead, Ohio, on Lake Erie. One of his hobbies was making handmade fishing lures, flies and poles. In addition, he taught himself the initial computer DOS system and until his last days was `connected,' surfing the Internet and e-mailing friends on his laptop. He will be remembered by his family and friends for his unique sense of humor.

Joe is survived by a daughter, Barbara (Robert) Rivard-Becker, Normal; a nephew, Guy (Cathy) Rivard, Pensacola, Fla.; five stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, “Jerry”; an infant son, Warren; and a brother, Col. Francis Rivard, USAF.
