She was born Nov. 14, 1921, daughter of Harley and Florence Narcum Brunsell at Evansville, Wis. On Jan. 7, 1944, she was married to Bruce Townsend. Lu retired from Country Cos. in Bloomington in 1989, and a short time later, moved to her vacation home in Birchwood, Wis., on Long Lake.
She loved feeding and watching the birds and wildlife right outside her kitchen window. She was a fantastic seamstress all her life and made several beautiful and some award-winning quilts after her retirement. She also enjoyed reading, crosswords, houseplants, gardening, anything to do with nature and learning new things. She always kept a sharp mind.
Lu faced more than her share of loss in her life, yet she remained upbeat and enjoyed life to the very end. Her loss is felt deeply by many. Special thanks to her “lake family,” all of them, for being so generous, helpful and loving towards her in the years she lived on Long Lake.
Lu was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bruce on Jan. 1, 1975; son, Bruce Jr.; and daughter, Mary.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Bentley; grandchildren, Morgan Zvanut and Jeremiah Townsend; brothers, Richard (Janice), Elwyn “Whitey” (Leslie) and David (Sharon) Brunsell; sisters, Betty (Bob) Graham, Dorothy (Clarence) Taplin, Judy (Bud) Hatlevig and Jean (Bob) Hackman; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
