Marilyn E. Dennis, 88, of Fairbury, died 2:40 p.m. Tuesday (Dec. 5, 2017) at Fairview Haven Retirement Community, Fairbury.
Her memorial service will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, Fairbury, with Pastor Dan Robertson officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded. A private family burial will be at a later date in Dawson Cemetery, Ellsworth.
Visitation will be 1 to 2 p.m. Monday. Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Fairbury, has charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church, Fairbury, or Fairview Haven Retirement Community, Fairbury.
She was born June 3, 1929, in Bloomington, the daughter of Earl and Eleanor Wikowsky Zabel. She married James G. Dennis on Nov. 22, 1947, in Cooksville. They preceded her in death.
She is survived by two sons, the Rev. David (Rita) Dennis, Knoxville, Tenn., and Daniel B. Dennis, Fairbury; sister in-law, Carolyn Abbuhl, Chandler, Ariz.; nieces and nephews, Judy, Susan, Kathi, Denny, John, Melea, Laurie, Melissa and Dan; and a special relative, Mary Jane Guthrie, Normal. She was preceded in death by one sister, Laverta Hopt, and one grandson, Timothy Dennis.
She graduated from Cooksville High School and attended Kankakee College to obtain her LPN degree. She worked as an LPN at Fairbury Hospital and later became an LPN and director of nursing at Fairview Haven Retirement Community.
Marilyn was a student of scripture and served as deacon and elder of First Presbyterian Church of Fairbury, where she also taught Sunday school for 40 years. She was a member of the Dorcas Circle of church and the Shakespeare Club, and a hospice volunteer.
