WELDON - Martha Ann Shinneman Fritts, 89, formerly of Weldon, passed away on Friday (Dec. 9, 2005) in Albuquerque, N.M.
She was born Jan. 6, 1916, in DeWitt County, the daughter of Clarence and Bonnie Shinneman.
She is survived by her son, Thomas Fritts and his wife Patricia of Belen, N.M.; daughter, Marsha Lynch-Gardner and her husband, Dale of Lincoln, Neb.; granddaughter, Jennifer Anders and her husband, Robert of Baltimore, Md.; grandson, Douglas Lynch and his wife, Alicia of Las Vegas, Nev.; and great-granddaughter, Paige Anders of Baltimore, Md.
Her husband of 44 years, Harold Fritts, passed away July 17, 1982. Her parents; brother, T.J. Shinneman; and granddaughter, Chalene Lynch, also preceded her in death.
Martha is a former resident of Weldon, Lane and Clinton, but subsequently lived in retirement communities in Lincoln, Neb.; Fairfax, Va.; Fort Collins, Colo.; and Albuquerque, N.M.
Martha graduated from Weldon High School in 1932. After completing two years at Illinois State Normal University, she taught in a one-room schoolhouse for the Deland-Weldon School District from 1936-1942. She received her bachelor of science degree in education from Illinois State University in 1962. Her teaching career spanned more than 40 years, the majority of which was spent in the Argenta-Oreana School District, where she initially taught 4th grade, and completed her career teaching 7th and 8th grade math. She retired in 1977.
After retirement, she substituted in Clinton and Deland-Weldon schools.
She loved auctions, antiques and travel, and during her lifetime, she traveled to all but three states of the United States, as well as Canada, South America, and England.
At Martha's request, cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be at the Weldon Cemetery, Weldon, at a later date to be determined.
