PEORIA — Mary Caroline Benko, 88, Peoria, passed away Saturday (Feb. 27, 2010) at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, Peoria.

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Cumerford-Hurd Funeral Home, Peoria. The Rev. Dr. D. Dean Follis will be officiating. Burial will be at Swan Lake Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Susan G. Koman Foundation.

Mary was born Oct. 20, 1921, in Rutland, daughter of Oscar L. and Hazel M. Marshall Weppler. She married John H. Benko Jr. in February 1945 in Rutland. He preceded her in death April 24, 1972.

Mary is survived by one daughter, Sharon (Leslie) Maylum, Dayton, Ohio; one son, John (Joyce) Benko III, Denver, Colo.; eight grandchildren, Amy (Jeff) Stedman, Deer Creek; Michelle (Shane) Meinders, Williamsfield; Heather (David) Kimberlin, Moraine, Ohio; Mimi (Tom) McFaul, Denver, Colo.; Chip Windsor, Havana; Seth Bradley, Chicago; Michael (Debi) Maylum, Oceanside, Calif.; and Timothy (Megan) Maylum, Bettendorf, Iowa; 19 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth Weppler, Urbana, and Dale Weppler, Long Point; and two sisters, Dorothy Cusac, Toluca, and Bonnie (Don) Sparks, Streater.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, William Weppler; one great-grandson, Austin; one niece, Judy; and one nephew, Scott.

Mary was a homemaker in her own home and she worked as a salesperson with Brown’s Sporting Goods in Peoria. Mary enjoyed camping, fishing, puzzles and bird-watching.
